What is Hijamah??
Cupping therapy also known as Hijamah is an age-old medical practice for many ailments, is now reviving with scientific principles. It has not only curative but also preventive effects on the human body. In the past era, different manual methods were used to practice cupping therapy, but now it is done in aseptic conditions by many qualified physicians. It is most effective among all detoxification methods used nowadays. That’s why cupping therapy is still alive after hundreds of years of its origin. Several research articles have shown the scientific basis of Hijama therapy and the mechanism of action as well. Since the field of application of cupping therapy is wide, its efficacy is good, its cost is low, without any/minimal side effects, it is popular in all socio-economic groups and all cultures worldwide. Even the Olympians and Celebrities are now enjoying its benefits.
What are the different ways of Cupping
Cupping was performed in earlier times using animal horns. As the science progressed, the “cups” were made from bamboo and then ceramic. The suction was primarily created, through the use of heat. The cups were first heated in the fire and then applied to the skin. As they cooled, the cups drew the skin inside.
Modern cupping is often performed using glass cups, or plastic that is rounded like balls and open on one end, and suction is created by suction pump
There are two main categories of cupping performed today:
-
Dry cupping is a suction-only method. (no cut is made)
-
Wet cupping may involve both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding.
In-country like India, it is prevalent and has proven to be one of the best affordable treatment methods for patients living here. Many people search for cupping therapy and get it done from non-certified persons leading to infection.
“We strictly advise getting Hijama therapy from a qualified expert doctor” because it is not only the right methods and instruments used in Hijama but also the right indication, the right position of application of cups and avoiding complications are important things for consideration.
What is Hijamah Treatment?
Hijama Treatment is a simple surgical procedure in which Hijama cups are applied at selected sites of the body with negative pressure and morbid blood is drawn out by minor cuts made on the superficial surface of the skin.
That fluid mixture contains collected interstitial fluids, filtered fluids (from blood capillaries) with causative pathological substances (CPS), hemolyzed blood cells (hemolysis RBCs, WBCs, and platelets). That fluid mixture does not contain intact blood cells as their sizes are much bigger than the sizes of pores of skin capillaries and cannot be filtered. Being superficial procedure the pain is easily bearable and much lesser than one think. So be relaxed, don’t fear just looking at photos.
As we have discussed earlier this procedure needs to be done in sterile conditions by a qualified physician who is well versed with medical knowledge of the human body like anatomy, physiology, pathology, and related medical information. It takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes for the whole procedure to complete. After the removal of cups, the area is thoroughly cleaned using cotton soaked with an antiseptic solution to avoid any chances of infection. Dressings with a bandage may be done if necessary on the site of cup application.
